We work in graphic and product design — identity, editorial, digital — but it’s always the same starting point: understanding how something needs to communicate, and to whom, before we design anything.

what we do

Books, catalogues, lookbooks, reports, guides and manuals. Editorial design is where we give structure to content that has a lot to say: the grid, the typography and the rhythm of the pages, from the first layout to the files for print. The aim is a publication that reads easily and is worth keeping.

who we work with

Artists, museums, fashion brands and research institutions. We have designed books with sculptor Gabriel Sobin, the exhibition catalogue and print pieces for Museen Tempelhof-Schöneberg in Berlin, several seasons of lookbooks for WoollyBoolly with photography by Anton Corbijn and Peter Lindbergh, and technical guides for an environmental research centre in Chile.

how we approach it

We read the content first. A book of sculpture needs white space and quiet; a manual on irrigation water needs complex data made simple. The design follows what the material needs, whatever the language: one of our books is published in German and Dari.

work process

We create valuable solutions using a lean methodology

1

listen

We start by understanding what you’re trying to achieve, who you’re talking to, and what’s getting in the way. Sometimes that conversation leads to the brief. Sometimes it changes it.

2

think

Research, concept development, and strategic direction. We work closely with you at every step — not presenting finished ideas, but building them together.

3

make

Proposals, prototypes, and the final build. We refine until it’s right, not until the budget runs out.

4

stay

We stay involved after delivery. Good design needs to work in the real world, and we keep thinking about your project long after the files are delivered.

and here we are

We’re Markos and Esther, the two people behind m—e studio, based in Berlin, working remotely and internationally by choice, not by circumstance.

It has been a true pleasure working with Esther and Markos over the years. With the making of several books and a website, their attention and sensitivity were very precious to bring together challenging projects like these. Their professionalism is always combined with a deeper understanding of what the artist is trying to convey: this is precious and rare. I have also witnessed their patience in the sometimes long process of choices and doubts we went through concerning layouts, fonts, contrasts etc. They never failed to keep focused and deliver specifically what we were looking for. I’m actually looking forward to next project so we can enjoy a new challenge! Their work is truly combined with passion and listening : also a rare quality nowadays, that is a key factor for a great collaboration.

Last year we had the pleasure of working with Esther and Markos on our orthodontic clinic’s brand in Berlin-Kreuzberg, and we can’t recommend them enough. From start to finish, they showed outstanding creativity, professionalism, and a deep grasp of our vision. The branding captures our identity and the vibe of the Kreuzberg/Bergmannkiez area perfectly. The logo, colors, and overall look are striking and speak to our audience. Their attention to detail and talent for translating our values into a clear brand narrative truly set them apart. They were patient, communicative, open to feedback, and made sure we felt involved throughout. Their work has already boosted our visibility and client engagement. markos+esther exceeded expectations. If you need a branding partner, look no further 🙂
